Your real files, and only when a desk is set to swap them. Hide all icons moves nothing at all. Swapping moves your files into a folder on your Mac and back again when you return, and never deletes, overwrites or uploads them. A private desk keeps its files in an encrypted disk instead: each is copied in and checked before the original leaves the Desktop. Before the first file moves, every planned move is written to a journal. If your Mac quits halfway, the next launch finishes the swap before doing anything else.

Into a folder of Deskswap's own, ~/Library/Application Support/Deskswap/Desktop files, so nothing extra ever shows on your Desktop. Each desk that swaps files gets its own folder there, and your normal files wait in one called original.

While you're on another desk, its Desktop files are kept in an encrypted disk image (AES-256), and the desk only opens with Touch ID or its passcode. Touch ID uses the fingers already on your Mac, and if a finger is added later, the desk asks for its passcode once before Touch ID opens it again. While you're on it, its files are ordinary files on your Desktop. Someone who knows your Mac's login password could still reach its key, so FileVault is what protects your whole Mac if it's lost.

No. Deskswap asks apps to quit politely, never force-quits, so an app with unsaved work can ask you first. If it's still open after 5 seconds, Deskswap tells you by name. It never quits Finder, or a screen recorder you have in front.
